The Global Forest Coalition mourns the loss of our colleague Fany Avila, director of the Asociación Indígena Ambiental in Panama, and we extend our deepest condolences to Fany Avila’s family, friends, and colleagues. Fany is survived by our colleague Marcial Arias, one of the founders of the Global Forest Coalition. Fany Avila was a wonderful and deeply respected Guna indigenous woman who we had the privilege of working with over many years, and as recently as October 2017, when she participated in our Latin America Regional Meeting in Santiago de Chile. She was a strong advocate, both in Panama and internationally, for respect for traditional knowledge and the role and rights of indigenous women in biodiversity conservation. Fany will be sorely missed.
