Vacancy: Controller of Finance and Operations
The Global Forest Coalition is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Controller of Finance and Operations to provide operational and financial support and oversee and optimise all aspects of financial and operational control of the organisation across GFC’s four main campaigns: Gender Justice and Forests; Climate Justice; Extractive Industries, Tourism and Infrastructure; and Unsustainable Livestock Production.
About GFC
The GFC is an international coalition of NGOs and Indigenous Peoples’ Organizations defending social justice and the rights of forest peoples in forest policies. GFC was founded in 2000 by 19 member organizations and has grown to include 126 groups in 71 countries. We participate in international forest policy meetings and organise joint advocacy campaigns on issues like Indigenous Peoples’ rights, the need for socially just forest policy and addressing the underlying causes of forest loss.
The mission of the Global Forest Coalition is to advocate for the conservation and restoration of forest ecosystems, through defending and promoting respect for the rights, territories, traditional knowledge and sustainable livelihoods of the Indigenous Peoples and local communities that coexist with them. The Global Forest Coalition is a feminist organisation that strongly supports women’s rights.
About the Role
Position: Controller of Finance and Operations
Part-time position, initially on a 3 days per week external services contract (24 hours/week), with the possibility of extension if additional resources are found. Currently, GFC pays 260 € per day.
Duration: This is an initial 1-year contract, with the possibility of extension after mutual positive evaluation at the end of the initial contract
Location: Remote and flexible hours. Access to a fast and reliable internet connection is required.

Key tasks and responsibilities:
- Overseeing and optimising all aspects of financial control of the organisation
- Ensure General Ledger postings, receipts, cost, and bank entries and payments are properly posted on a timely basis. Responsible for the complete financial administration.
- Preparation of reports for a variety of donors in line with different reporting requirements
- Liaising and working with donors and partner organisations on issues relating to financial reporting requirements, audits and other finance-related issues
- Developing and monitoring GFC organisational budget
- Providing oversight on payroll and labour contracts
- Engaging in the Staff Committee bringing a financial control perspective
- Providing a monthly report and overview to the team on the financial situation of GFC, including liquidity overview and income/expenditure per campaign/donor and other finance issues
- Supporting campaign coordinators and Policy director where needed, including spending overviews, planning, budget administration, and reporting matters.
- Prepare year-end close reporting and annual audit and assistance of external accountants with the annual audit of the financial statements of the organisation and occasional project audits
- Office management
- Assistance with fundraising and liaison with partner organisations and funders
- Taking care of Team care, ethics and HR
- Planning monthly Advisory Council (staff) meetings.
- Following discussions in the Advisory Council and Communications Team.
- Overviewing rules as agreed in the Handbook and Board and Advisory Council’s decisions.
Main requirements:
- Self-motivated, accurate and organised, and able to work independently
- Able to work with web-based accounting programs (Exact)
- Good knowledge of Excel
- Good communication skills and capacity to work primarily with email and other web-based communication tools including Zoom
- Good knowledge of English and preferably sufficient knowledge of Dutch. Knowledge of basic Spanish, Russian and/or French is an advantage
- Ability to work in a highly multi-cultural environment with different cultures, languages and time zones.
- Experience with non-profit organisations is an advantage
- required education level: relevant bachelor’s degree, possibly a starter, we will help in the first transition period and provide a training schedule
- Decision-making authority: Yes, in consultation with the Advisory Council and Policy Director
- Budgetary responsibility: No, but maintains overall budgetary oversight.
