Briefing paper on Land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF), prepared by GFC’s European focal point Almuth Ernsting from Biofuelwatch and Helena Paul from Econexus.
LULUCF is currently being discussed at the UN climate meeting in Bonn. The briefing makes clear that creative LULUCF accounting opens the door for Annex I countries to claim emission reductions which do not exist. Also, the false definition of forests and forest management in the proposal, will allow harmful carbon credits for monoculture tree plantations. Plantations are harmful for people, the environment and the climate.
According to the authors: The LULUCF offsetting proposal could potentially open the doors to (almost) unlimited carbon offsets from crop and tree plantations of all types, from logging, forests, grasslands and croplands. This is being discussed outside the negotiation about CDM reform, thus bypassing those working groups.
